Hal Johnson writes books. His most recent, FEARSOME CREATURES OF THE LUMBERWOODS (Workman), is a Borgesian folk nightmare for children. Suitable for all ages, but it does contain a lot of grisly death, in an Edward Gorey or Grimm brothers vein, and the word “mucopurulence.” Starred reviews from Kirkus, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist, bless their hearts. The illustrations are great, and in some printings they glow in the dark.

Still available as an ebook is his first novel, IMMORTAL LYCANTHROPES (Clarion), which was sort of like a YA Illuminatus!, and sort of like Treasure Island with more werecreatures. Kirkus called it “uber-intellectual” and “drenched in nihilism,” which they didn’t mean as a compliment, but how could it not be? Oh, also, it’s sort of like Highlander written by Thomas Pynchon, and the illustrations are great.

Hal lives in Connecticut with his wife and daughter. When he is not generating humanist propaganda from the nihilist aesthete front, he works in the comic book industry.
