Peter Steiner

Peter Steiner grew up in Cincinnati, graduated from the University of Miami (FL) and served two years in the army in Germany. After earning a PhD in German Literature from the University of Pittsburgh, he taught German at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania before leaving to become an artist.

Steiner drew cartoons and painted landscapes and still lifes and sold his first cartoon to the New Yorker in 1979. Eventually he became a regular contributor to the magazine, and for 25 years made his living as a cartoonist for the New Yorker, the Weekly Standard, the Washington Times, and other publications. He continued to paint, having occasional one-person exhibitions as well as participating in group shows.

Steiner’s fiction-writing career began in the 1990s and his first novel, A FRENCH COUNTRY MURDER (retitled in paperback LE CRIME), was published in 2003 by Saint Martin’s Press. Six more novels followed—L’ASSASSIN, THE TERRORIST, THE RESISTANCE, THE CAPITALIST, THE GOOD COP, and THE CONSTANT MAN—all to excellent reviews.
